Jacob and Ebba De la Gardie's first born son was statesman Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie (1622-1686). Magnus married King Charles X Gustav's sister Maria Euphrosyne. During his career he was the Marshal of the Realm from 1651, President of the College Chamber from 1652, Governor General of Livonia from 1655 and Privy Counsellor from 1660.
Magnus was one of Sweden's most famous people. His family had immunity. When a woman testified in the 1600's witch trials she had seen Magnus' wife Maria during witch's sabbath, the accusation was considered as nonsense.
Magnus was involved in the so called regency council. The superpower of Sweden had grown too vast and Magnus was unable to manage with the finances of a country constantly at war. He lost both his power and his considerable estates.
According to the account for corruption the Privy Counsellor,Count Magnus De la Gardie and his senate are solely responsible for the poor financial state of Sweden. The debt to the Crown is four million riksdaler.
